(Kinda)Old, Sorta Dark (But Not very) House (If You Can Call It That)
This is William Castle's remake of the James Whale 1932 classic THE OLD DARK HOUSE based on the book by J. B. Priestley. The ORIGINAL starred Charles Laughton, Melvyn Douglas, Raymond Massey, Ernest Thesiger (forever famous as "Dr. Pretorius" in THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN) and Boris Karloff.
The remake stars Tom Poston, Robert Morley, Janette Scott (whose name was immortalized in that song from THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW) Pter Bull, andcartoonist Charles Addams' hand (in the title sequence.
While there is some dark comedy both in the original novel and the original movie this version is played strictly for laughs. And this cast is very good at making you laugh.
I don't know what Priestley would've thought of this version but I give it 4 stars.
